In Andhra Pradesh, the Visakhapatnam district administration and city police are geared up for the smooth conduct of the 3rd BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Urbanisation Forum Meet with the theme- “Building responsive, inclusive and collective solutions for urbanisation”. The Union government had selected Visakhapatnam for hosting the summit wherein delegates will discuss investments, urbanisation, formation of new cities and policies and will explore solutions for the challenges. Chandrababu Naidu has underscored the need for evolving measures to face serious challenges that are likely to be thrown up by the rapid pace of urbanisation. “Urbanisation is a reality, and it is unstoppable. Close to 80 per cent of the GDP is expected to come from urban areas in the near future,” he said, stressing the need for governments to gear up for meeting challenges. Mr. Naidu was delivering the keynote address at a meeting convened by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in New Delhi on Wednesday. A World Bank study of urbanisation in South Asia released last month points out, through Table 1, that South Asia is the least urbanised major world region. However, the Bank's own estimate of urban agglomeration is considerably - almost twice - as high as India's domestic estimate, a point made for all the South Asian countries in Table 2. As Table 3 shows, South Asia is not urbanising as fast as its low urban ratio would suggest, either, well behind East Asia and on a par with sub-Saharan Africa. Nor is South Asia becoming urban at the rate that seems appropriate for its stage of economic development, as Table 4 suggests.
