Apple Leak Reveals Massive, Expensive New iPhone

The iPhone 8 (some claim it will be called the ‘iPhone X’), is going to be the  most radical redesign  of  Apple   AAPL +0.59% ’s smartphone range to date. And now a major source has just revealed its biggest new feature and most painful drawback… Nikkei, the world’s largest financial newspaper, has  reported  that Apple will launch three configurations of iPhone in 2017. Two of these are expected to be incremental updates on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (with iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus branding), and an iPhone 8 with an all new OLED display measuring a massive 5.8-inches. This would mean the iPhone 8 has the largest display of any iPhone ever made and is significantly larger than any current mass market smartphones (though the  Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will change that ). Chinese phone companies have developed a reputation, especially to western tech media, for its tendency to “borrow” hardware design cues from iPhones. While that stigma is not unearned, it’s a bit dated because some Chinese phonemakers, chief among them Huawei, have developed its own design language and style. (Conversely, when Apple or Google borrow ideas from Chinese companies, western media seem oblivious – just check out all the pieces gushing about the new iPhone’s dual-camera “bokeh” trick, or Google Pixel’s “swipe on the fingerprint sensor to pull down notifications” shortcut … Huawei’s P9 offered those things half a year ago). Plus, copying Apple is old news. Some Chinese companies have moved to Samsung for inspiration. Apple Manufacturing iPhones Locally Would Be A Fascinating Test For The Indian Economy

The idea that  Apple   AAPL -0.05%   might or should produce iPhones locally inside the Indian economy has been long discussed. From our point of view here, thinking about economics, it would actually be a fascinating test of the abilities, the sophistication, of that Indian economy. For the question would be whether there would be the creation of a supply chain capable of meeting the volumes and standards that Apple requires. The answer isn’t clear cut which is why the idea, if it goes ahead, will be such a fascinating thing to observe. The results from Brazil show that it’s not an easy thing to create, such a supply chain. There’s also a certain mordant humour to the idea. Over here in Europe everyone is shouting at Apple for the manner in which they dodge local taxation. And yet a decision to manufacture in India would at least partly be driven by the desire to dodge  local taxation : Price is also an important factor for Indian customers and should Apple...

Around the world in an iPhone

Traveling in China, I spoke the universal language of app Landing late at night in Shenzhen for my first trip to China, I was nervous about being able to navigate the city. I didn’t speak the language and had never been to Asia. Starting the next day I would have the services of a local translator, but for that first night, I was on my own. Normally I use  Google services for everything , but those are blocked in China. I opened my iPhone, connected to an international Mifi, and tapped the Uber app. The interface alerted me that I would be switching to the Chinese version, controlled now by Uber’s rival turned business partner Didi. The black screen turned a deep shade of red, and just like that, I had hailed a cab. MY CHAT APP ALSO PROVIDED INSTANTANEOUS TRANSLATION I used Apple Maps to locate the apartment we had reserved through AirBnB.
