A diverse range of breakthrough technologies, including batteries capable of providing power to whole villages, “socially aware” artificial intelligence and new generation solar panels, could soon be playing a role in tackling the world’s most pressing challenges, according to  a list published today   by the World Economic Forum. “Technology has a critical role to play in addressing each of the major challenges the world faces, yet it also poses significant economic and social risks. 5 million jobs to be lost by 2020

We are seeing an era of unprecedented change in the way we work. Rapid advancements in the fields of technology, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, and in how we create things, such as robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology, will dramatically change the characteristics of the global workforce. The  Fourth Industrial Revolution  is changing the workplace fast, and we will need to adapt our skills to be ready for it. What will happen to jobs? According to the Forum’s  Future of Jobs   report, some jobs will be wiped out, others will be in high demand, but all in all, around 5 million jobs will be lost. Already jobs exist now that had never been heard of five years ago: the role of data scientist, which is in huge demand, is one example. Other jobs will start to require skills not previously associated with them. Those working in sales or manufacturing, for instance, will need a better grasp of technology...

Seeks to build Brand AP image Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is leading a State delegation to World Economic Forum's 46th annual meeting to be held during January 20 to 23 in Davos, Switzerland. After recently setting the stage of flow of investments with the CII Partnership Summit in Vizag earlier this month, the WEF meet at Davos is another effort at building Brand AP. Building on “Brand AP”, the Chief Minister mission at the event, where heads of state and CEOs take part, is aimed at projecting Andhra Pradesh as an ideal investment destination. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan, are among those invited from India to attend the Summit. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister is the only State head who has been invited. For the WEF event on the “Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” the Chief Minister will take part as a special guest and attend the session along with ministers of other countries and CEOs...

From the environment to international security and the coming Fourth Industrial Revolution, the World Economic Forum’s  Global Risks Report 2016  finds risks on the rise in 2016. In this year’s annual survey, almost 750 experts assessed 29 separate global risks for both impact and likelihood over a 10-year time horizon. The risk with the greatest potential impact in 2016 was found to be a  failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation . This is the first time since the report was published in 2006 that an environmental risk has topped the ranking. This year, it was considered to have greater potential damage than  weapons of mass destruction  (2nd),  water crises  (3rd),  large-scale involuntary migration (4th) and  severe energy price shock  (5th). Over 40 heads of state and government, as well as 2,500 leaders from business and society will convene at the  46th World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, from 20 to 23 January in Davos-Klosters , Switzerland, under the theme, Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution . Critical current challenges, such as  security ,  climate change  and  “new normal” global growth and commodity prices,  are among the issues on the agenda.
