CM for measures to face urbanisation challenges

Walk to work, cycle to work features to make Amaravati a green capital, says Naidu

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has underscored the need for evolving measures to face serious challenges that are likely to be thrown up by the rapid pace of urbanisation.

“Urbanisation is a reality, and it is unstoppable. Close to 80 per cent of the GDP is expected to come from urban areas in the near future,” he said, stressing the need for governments to gear up for meeting challenges. Mr. Naidu was delivering the keynote address at a meeting convened by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in New Delhi on Wednesday.

He recalled how he developed Hyderabad into an economic and IT hub during his earlier stint as Chief Minister of the united State and said that he had suggested some structural changes in urban development, including generation of energy through solid wastes, as convenor of the sub-group of the Swachch Bharat Mission.

The Chief Minister said people had given him an opportunity to build a city and handed over 33,000 acres under the land pooling scheme. “The government is planning to build a world-class city, which is sure to become a role model for future cities,” he added.

Mr. Naidu said efforts were being made to ensure that Amaravati was environmental friendly. “It has been planned to incorporate features like ‘walk to work’, ‘cycle to work’ and water taxis in the new city that will be a ‘blue and green city’,” the Chief Minister added.

The government has set up a Smart AP Foundation, besides intensifying efforts to mobilise funds through corporate social responsibility, he said and exhorted the industry and individuals to become partners in the development process.

A delegation of FICCI earlier called on Mr. Naidu at AP Bhavan and presented to him a report on the salient features of direct selling.
