Apple released iOS 9 day before, and reports indicate that the adoption is extremely fast-paced. While the company hasn’t revealed official numbers, analytics firm Mixpanel reveals that iOS 9 adoption reached 12 percent in just 24 hours.
The rate of adoption is slightly better than iOS 8 adoption last year, and unsurprisingly is much slower than iOS 7 adoption the year before. Apple users reported some early download issues with iOS 9, but that seems to now have been resolved. The error in installation was attributed to the heavy load on Apple servers as many users tried to transition to iOS 9.
The big highlight with the iOS 9 installation is its size. While previous versions ate up a lot of space, the latest one is less than 1.5GB.TechCrunch spoke to Mixpanel CEO Suhail Doshi who provided some context to adoption rate when compared to Android Lollipop.
“This kind of adoption took Android’s latest operating system, Lollipop, in comparison 5 months to achieve. One huge advantage Apple got right this year over last year was that the update is much smaller than last year (3.5x smaller) — Apple has empathy for its users who have nearly maxed out the space on their phones. However, one issue for it being substantially slow compared to iOS 7 is that servers are having trouble keeping up right now as people update,” he said.
The report also shared an image of adoption rate that showed that iOS 9 had surpassed all older than iOS 8 versions, which now exists only on seven percent of Apple devices. To put another perspective at this adoption rate, Android Lollipop took nearly five months to reach the 12 percent adoption mark.
When the servers finally play catch up, iOS 9 will see a larger rate of adoption. The iOS 9 update comes with a slew of new features such as Proactive Assistant, improved Siri, multitasking for iPad and a revamped notes app. The update also brings new QuickType keyboard with Hindi transliteration feature. Improved battery life and new features in Apple Maps are other improvements that will come along with the iOS 9 update
